Grounding Sheets, Mattress Covers & More for Grounded Sleep
Sleeping grounded is the easiest and best way to attune with the Earth’s natural electrical energy. Most of us spend far more time in bed each night than we do barefoot outside (or wearing grounding shoes), so why not log long hours of grounding in our sleep?
There are several ways to do it, and the right one depends on what matters most to you: durability and easy care, the feel of your usual bedding, luxurious softness, or simply trying grounding before you invest. Below, we explain each option, what we've learned from sleeping grounded since 2009, and the honest trade-offs.

Find Your Best Fit
Decision guide:
Want the longest-lasting, easiest-to-clean option? Invest in an Earthing mattress cover, sleep mat, and/or pillow cover.
Want it to feel like regular bedding? Utilize a plug-in grounding sheet from Rhizal or GroundLuxe, or use an Earthing throw blanket.
Want luxurious softness (and USA-made)? Snuggle up on a TRU47 Jersey modal bed mat and/or pillowcase.
Partner doesn't want to ground? Try an Earthing sleep mat or TRU47 bed mat on your side only.
Not ready to commit? Sleep with your feet on an Earthing Universal Mat for a few weeks.

How Do You Sleep Grounded?
Sleeping grounded is effortless, once you get your system set up. And the initial process is relatively simple:
Locate a properly grounded outlet - it will have three prongs, and the lower one with a rounded edge is the ground port.
Test it with an outlet checker to determine whether the outlet is properly grounded. (Earthing carbon sleep systems and Rhizal grounding sheets come with checkers.)
Attach the connector cord to your device and plug it into the ground port (or into an Earthing safety adaptor that has been plugged into the outlet).
If you can’t or don’t wish to ground through an outlet ground port, you can connect your grounding sleep device to a ground rod, which you insert into nearby earth.
Some people may wish to test out sleeping grounded with a Earthing Univeral Mat
If you’re not ready to invest in a grounded sleep system yet, we recommend testing the waters by sleeping on a Universal Earthing Mat - you’ll know in a few weeks if a sleep system that provides more head-to-toe coverage is right for you.
Set up the mat like you would any other indoor grounding device, and place it in your bed. It can go under any part of your body. We recommend bare skin contact with grounding devices, thus the feet are a good choice.
The Universal Mat is thicker and made of a different material than Earthing Sleep Mats, Mattress and Pillow Covers, but is similarly carbon-based and beyond easy to clean.
Our top picks for sleeping grounded are…
Earthing Carbon Sleep Systems: Mattress Covers, Sleep Mats and Pillow Covers
Earthing founder Clint Ober developed the first indoor grounding products and has spent about 20 years refining them, in collaboration with researchers behind many of the original grounding studies. He co-wrote Earthing: the most important health discovery ever? (2010) with our father, cardiologist Dr. Stephen Sinatra, and Martin Zucker.
Ober actually made the first silver-threaded grounding sheet. (Step and I have each slept on a few of the early versions, starting in 2009!) He later moved to carbon-based mattress covers, sleep mats and pillow covers because they last longer: silver threads gradually lose conductivity with washing and exposure to body lotions and oils, while carbon holds up. Today’s versions of these carbon-based grounding sleep systems are much smoother, thinner and lighter than earlier models, and they wipe clean in minutes - no laundry!
Because many similar-looking products are now on the market, we recommend buying Earthing-brand products from Earthing.com or Earthing’s official Amazon store.
Can I use sheets over my Earthing cover?
For best results, we recommend sleeping directly atop Earthing’s carbon-based products, making at least some skin contact. In our experience, some regular sheets and pillowcases can blunt, and even block, conductivity. While sheets made of natural materials like cotton and bamboo shouldn’t block conductivity (as fully synthetic sheets tend to), you need to sweat in them for optimal conductivity.
One way to find out if your sheets are compatible is to purchase a product tester (some Earthing kits come with one) and test the carbon sleep system with and without the your usual bedding.
Honest Comfort Notes
What to expect: Earthing covers are thin and smooth rather than soft like cotton. Some people find them too cool to lie on in winter (my husband included), and if you sweat a lot at night, you may notice it more than with fabric sheets. If that’s you, a silver-threaded pillowcase (like TRU47’s) or overlay sheet on top can help, or a grounding sheet may suit you better.
Silver-threaded overlay sheets do not plug into the ground port; rather their conductive threading helps facilitate the flow of Earth energy from the mat or mattress cover into your body. Said differently, they must be used with another grounding device, like a sleep mat or mattress cover because while they are conductive, they will not ground you on their own. You can find a variety of silver-threaded overlay sheets and pillowcases at Amazon.com (however, since we haven’t tried any, we can’t vouch for their quality or effectiveness).
Plug-In Grounding Sheets
If you prefer the aesthetics and familiar feel of regular sheets, here are grounding sheets we recommend from brands we use and trust:
Our top recommended brand of plug-in grounding sheets is Rhizal (who wowed us first with their awesome grounding shoes!). Their fitted grounded sheets come in five sizes (twin, full, queen, king, and Cal king - some are made to order) and three colors (white, light green and gray).
Rhizal’s grounding sheets are 90% organic cotton and 10% silver-conductive thread. Each sheet comes with an outlet tester.
While we have yet to try Rhizal’s sheets, we are comfortable recommending them because we trust the brand….for good reason. Between us, Step and I have purchased several pairs of Rhizal grounding shoes and are impressed with their outstanding quality, comfort and conductivity. Rhizal products are good stuff!
GroundLuxe grounding sheets and pillowcases are another great option. Made 90% of organic cotton and 10% silver threads, GroundLuxe grounded bedding is currently offered by TRU47, another brand we know and trust (more on TRU47 below).
Choose from flat and/or fitted grounding sheets in various mattress sizes (from twin to Cal-king). Each sheet comes in three colors: beige, light gray and dark gray.
GroundLuxe also offers a USA-sewn, deep-pocket fitted grounding sheet for various mattresses ranging from 8 inches deep to 18 inches deep; comes in dark gray only. GroundLuxe pillowcases come in two colors: beige and light gray.
All GroundLuxe bedding are traditional style grounding sheets in that they snap to a grounding cord which you plug into the ground port of a three-prong electrical outlet.
Luxury Silver Bedding by TRU47
TRU47 founder Sharon Whiteley, who co-wrote the 2023 book Get Grounded Get Well with Step Sinatra and Dr. Stephen Sinatra, now serves as an advisor to the company, which offers a range of silver-threaded wellness products including TRU47’s own conductive pillowcases and partial grounding sheets (also called bed mats). Silver is highly conductive and is also valued for its antimicrobial and temperature-regulating properties, making it a natural fit for bedding.
Pillowcases: One side of each pillowcase is soft Jersey Modal woven with 99.99% pure silver threads; the other side is satin. You can use them two ways: over the Earthing pillow covers shown above, or on their own, connected to an outlet’s ground port with a conductive alligator clip cord (sold separately). They come in natural and black, in king and queen/standard sizes, in one- and two-packs.
Partial grounding sheets: Made of the same silver-threaded Jersey Modal, these sheets lie across the width or length of your bed, with the ends tucked under the mattress, so you can ground part or all of your body. They plug into an outlet’s ground port with an alligator clip cord (sold separately) that attaches anywhere on the sheet; available in black and beige/natural, in king, queen, full and twin sizes.
For a smaller version of the partial sheet, check out the TRU47 Grounded Lounger.
TRU47 also offers silver-threaded clothing, beanies, eye masks and grounding socks (among a wide variety of wellness products); see our TRU47 page for more.
Cozy EXTRAS
Earthing Throw Blanket
It may be the coziest, comfiest and warmest grounding device ever - a 44” x 68” plush, conductive throw blanket made of a cotton-polyester blend, and woven with silver threads.
Like other Earthing sleep systems, this blanket plugs into the ground port of an electrical outlet (or connects to the earth via a grounding rod). If you tend to fall asleep on your couch (or spend a lot of time there), this throw provides an alternate option for sleeping grounded.
Throw kit comes with a blanket, coil cord, outlet checker, and safety adaptor. $150 (on sale) - $300
It’s also currently bundled with the Universal Mat for $219
Note: only one side of this grounding blanket is conductive: the striped one with the snap for cord attachment. So be sure to wrap yourself in that side!
Marchann’s review: I love this soft grounding blanket (and so do my kitties)! It’s proven to be an effective and warm way to sleep grounded when traveling. The blanket is throw-size, and will best ground you when in contact with bare skin, so dress minimally when using it!
TRU47 Grounded Lounger
Luxury meets comfort with this lightweight grounding blanket.
Just like the TRU47 partial grounding sheet / bed mat, this Lounger is USA-made with soft, stretchy Jersey modal that’s interwoven with conductive, pure silver yarn of the highest quality. The only difference is it’s size - built for a body at 68” x 26”, rather than a mattress.
Also like the partial sheet, the Lounger connects to an outlet ground port with TRU47’s alligator clip cord, sold separately.
Price: $285 for the blanket, $73 for the alligator clip cord
How Sleeping Grounded Works
Most indoor grounding devices connect you to Earth’s natural energy through one of two ways: through the ground port of a grounded electrical outlet or via a ground rod inserted into nearby earth.
Ungrounded (left) vs. grounded (right) electrical outlet
OPTION A: Connect through an electrical outlet’s ground port.
Step 1: Identify usable outlets. Look for three holes in each outlet. If there’s only two, you will need to use a ground rod instead.
The lower third hole with rounded edges is the ground port. (Grounding ports were developed in the 1960s as a safety feature to minimize risk of electric shock.)
Step 2: Determine whether your outlet is properly grounded. You can easily do this by using an outlet checker.
Earthing carbon grounding kits automatically come with checkers, as do Rhizal grounding sheets. TRU47 sells the checker separately.
Outlet Checker for U.S. ground ports, plugged in with right two lights lit indicated outlet is properly grounded.
Plug the checker into a three-prong outlet. If the two yellow lights (middle and right) are lit, you are good to go - your grounding sleep system will connect you to the Earth’s energy once you’re plugged in.
If the two yellow lights don’t come on, you’ll need to test and connect through another outlet with a conductive ground port. If you do not have grounded outlets or prefer not to use the outlet, use an Earthing® Ground Rod.
Note: plugging into the ground port does NOT connect your grounding sleep product with the electricity that powers your lights and appliances; rather it puts the product in contact with the ground wire that connects to other outlets in your house. For added protection, Earthing-brand connector cords contain 100kohm resistors to limit current.
Step 3: Connect your grounding device to the ground port.
All Earthing carbon sleep systems and plug-in grounding sheets come with a connector cord which snaps onto the product, and plugs into the ground port (see below first two cords, as examples).
Coiled grounding cord with snap

Alligator clip grounding cord

TRU47 silver-threaded bed mats and pillowcases do not have snaps; rather, you attach an Alligator clip cord to any part of them, then plug the other end of the cord into the ground port (see above pictures, right).
Once these three basic steps are complete, you can start using your product!
Note: All Earthing carbon sleep systems come with a Safety Adaptor into which you can plug two grounding products. This is especially handy when you don’t have many outlets, but are using multiple grounding devices such as pillow covers and sleep mats.
Earthing Safety Adaptor for U.S. type B wall outlet
OPTION B: Connect to Earth energy using a ground rod.
Step 1: Attach grounding cord to your product via snap or alligator clip, then plug the other end into the ground rod cord. ‘
Step 2: Feed the rod through an open window or door.
Step 3: Plant your rod into the ground. Moist soil is best for conductivity. If you live in a climate where the ground freezes, push the rod in as far as possible (as frozen ground is less conductive).
Both Earthing and Rhizal both sell grounding rods for use with their sleep systems.
If you need a longer cord, Earthing also sells 40’extension cords for connection between your product cord and the ground rod cord (enabling approximately 90’ from your product to the ground.
FAQ About Sleeping Grounded
-
People who sleep grounded often report that they sleep better, have more energy, feel more relaxed and rested, and even feel less pain. This is likely because grounding helps regulate autonomic nervous system activity, as small studies suggest. Among other things, grounding appears to induce a relaxation response and improve cortisol levels. Grounding overall has an anti-inflammatory effect on the body and can reduce pain and recovery time after intense physical activity. Studies also indicate it may have a regulatory effect on various hormones in the body and can lead to cardiovascular benefits, such as improved heart rate variability and blood viscosity (zeta potential).
-
It all depends on which you value more: durability or comfort? An Earthing carbon sleep system will last longer than silver-threaded grounding sheets because the silver tends to oxidize over time with sweat, washing, and exposure to body oils and detergents. However, grounding sheets feel more like regular sheets, providing the comfort you’re akin to. At the end of the day, both will provide the conductivity you’re looking for.
-
Silver-threaded grounding sheets gradually lose conductivity as the silver wears and oxidizes with washing and exposure to body lotions and oils, so they need replacing sooner than carbon-based products. You can potentially extend the life of your silver-threaded sheets by refraining from heat-drying them and washing them in cool or cold water only - by hand or on a gentle machine cycle.
Earthing’s carbon mattress covers, sleep mats and pillow covers are designed to last longer and are cleaned by simply wiping them down. A product tester lets you check whether any grounding product is still conducting.
-
You can, but in our experience it may reduce or even block the connection. When I (Marchann) tested my setup with Earthing’s product tester, my regular sheets, which contained synthetic fibers, blocked conductivity. We haven’t tested natural-fiber sheets, so if you’d like to use one, choose thin cotton or bamboo and check it with a product tester first. Our recommendation is to sleep directly on the cover with some bare skin contact. For a softer feel that still conducts, you can layer a silver-threaded pillowcase or overlay sheet on top.
-
Washing your grounding sheets or covers every 2-3 weeks helps remove oil and sweat residues that can impede conductivity.
Silver-threaded sheets: As chemical and whitening detergents, oils and heat can shorten their conductivity lifespan, wash grounding sheets by hand in lukewarm or warm water or by machine on a gentle, warm-water cycle. Use mild soap or natural detergent. Air dry if possible; otherwise use minimal heat.
Carbon sleep systems: Regularly wipe mattress covers, sleep mats and pillow covers down with a wet cloth. On occasion, use a wet cloth with a small amount of mild soap, then wipe down again with just a wet cloth. Let air dry completely.
-
March has been doing this for years! The answer is to use a grounding product only on your side of the bed. Earthing and TRU47 sleep mats serve this exact purpose, though other products like a simple grounding pillow cover or pillowcase under your head and/or Universal Mat under your feet will also do the trick, as well a grounded throw blanket. It all depends on what’s right for you.
-
Yes, if that outlet is properly grounded. Grounding cords connect only to the outlet's ground port, not to the electrical current. Additionally, as an extra safety precaution, Earthing cords also contain a 100k ohm resistor to limit current. If you’re unsure as to whether your outlet is properly grounded, use an outlet checker to test it prior to plugging in your grounding device.
As a precautionary measure, during lightning storms, we recommend unplugging your grounding device.
Beyond Grounding: the Bed Itself
Sleep quality depends on more than grounding: your mattress, materials and support all matter. For those ready to invest in a complete, non-toxic sleep system, we’re impressed by SAMINA’s handmade beds from Austria.
SAMINA also offers the Lokosana pad, which uses a different, contactless approach to grounding that we're still evaluating.
